THE VERTICAL REVOLUTION IS HERE MOBILE ECOMMERCE
There’s a change in customer behaviour and it’s being led by Mobile Ecommerce. PayPal is calling it the Vertical Revolution. Click on the stats to see what customers are doing.
Are you the mobile-ready 49%?
Aussie consumers are shopping on mobile, but 51% of businesses state that they aren’t ready for mobile shoppers. On top of that, almost one-third (31%) of businesses haven’t made plans to change this. It’s not surprising that 26% of businesses get zero sales via mobile device. That’s a large slice of opportunity they’re missing out on.
71% of customers shop on mobile with Mobile Ecommerce
Almost three-quarters (71%) of respondents use mobile to make payments, which makes sense since Australia has one of the highest levels of mobile penetration globally. The younger age group surpasses the average with 85% of shoppers aged 18-34 shopping on mobile. That’s hardly surprising since 80% of Aussies aged 18+ have smartphones and are using them more and more in every facet of their lives.
Monthly mCommerce Spend
The average Mobile Ecommerce spend is $330 per month, with 22% of customers spending over $500. Those big spenders aren’t specific to an age group – of those spending over $500, 23% are 18-34 years old, 26% are 35-49, and 19% are 50 and over.
1 in 3 Aussies make weekly mobile payments
More than a third (36%) of respondents make mobile payments at least once a week, while 1 in 5 (22%) do it more than once a week. Millennials (18-34) are the most prolific mobile shoppers with nearly half of this group (47%) paying via mobile at least once per week. It’s not just the millennials – one quarter (24%) of 50+ respondents are purchasing and paying on their mobiles at least once a week as well.
Mobile security is a major concern for Australian mobile shoppers since our phone has become our virtual wallet. 64% of Aussies say that they don’t go anywhere without their mobiles, 25% of mCommerce users have experienced a fraudulent transaction and a further 25% have experienced loss or theft of a mobile device. It’s no surprise that 1 in 2 (49%) Australian smartphone users are worried about security when shopping on mobile. However, 67% are sure there is more they could be doing to protect their financial details. There is a solution. Just PayPal it.
Shape Up Your Shipping
Free and fast shipping is no longer an incentive, it is an expectation. According to 42% of online shoppers, Australia is behind when it comes to shipping. Three-quarters of online shoppers (73%) have abandoned purchases due to prohibitive shipping costs, while two fifths (42%) have done so due to shipping time. More than half of online shoppers (57%) expect a free shipping option, and the same number wouldn’t shop twice with a business whose delivery took too long.
SEE WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS SEE
Never has is it been more important to deliver a seamless customer experience. Mobile commerce is growing so rapidly that many retailers now think “mobile first”.
